Jocote Corona is a delicious, vitamin-rich fruit, perfect for making jams and desserts. It is El Salvador's emblematic fruit and contains many vitamins and minerals, as well as being antioxidant. Highly valued in the preparation of various dishes, it is marinated in Chaparro.

In the western part of the country, in the coffee-growing areas of Santa Ana Volcano, around Lake Coatepeque and Cerro Verde, and in the eastern coffee region of the country, as well as in the northern areas of San Vicente Volcano, Jocote Corona is cultivated.

Where does the name come from?

Its name is due to small protuberances on one end, which resemble a crown. It is a sweet and flavorful fruit rich in many vitamins, minerals, and amino acids. Additionally, it is antioxidant, which is why it is believed to help prevent the effects of free radicals, potentially reducing the risk of diseases.

Jocote Corona is a variety of the Salvadoran plum, a fruit with multiple uses; in the western part of the country, this fruit is added to various dishes such as ceviche or pupusas, but it is also incorporated into pizza, desserts, flan, and jams that are very delicious. It is also marinated in Chaparro, an iconic Salvadoran liquor.

Events featuring Jocote

To promote Jocote Corona, tasting events are organized, along with fashion shows, and artisans create dolls, earrings, and other crafts with the seed or fruit, which are used to make dyes for clothing.

In the municipality of San Lorenzo, they cultivate the Red Baron Jocote, which, unlike Jocote Corona, is more acidic and enjoyed with a few drops of lemon and salt. Its pulp is used in the preparation of pupusas, quesadillas, tortas, soft drinks, jams, and salsas.
