Whether you are a religious person or not, the truth is that Holy Week is full of traditions in El Salvador. Many of the most important ones are directly linked to food.
The religious tradition
One of the most important rules in the religious tradition is to avoid consuming red meat and to favor fish.
This is why the star dish is the dried fish, which has a quite salty taste and a strong smell, but can be complemented with rice, cassava, or avocado to make the experience milder on the palate.
If the flavor of fish doesn't convince you, you can instead prepare some traditional pisque tamales, which are extremely delicious and eagerly anticipated by the whole family.
These tamales serve as a substitute for tortillas and include ingredients such as chipilín, eggs, or beans. They are always accompanied by a tasty creole sauce or a homemade tomato sauce for added flavor.
Other options
Maybe tamales are not your thing, in that case you can prepare some delicious torrejas, which are usually a breakfast food, but during Holy Week they can be served as snacks throughout the day’s activities. In the recipe shared here, we give a special touch by adding a cinnamon stick to the honey to give it that unique flavor.
Finally, as sweeter options especially for the little ones, we have the famous jocotes or mangoes in honey. In both cases, the process is fairly similar: make some cuts without removing the seeds, then boil them. Finally, drench them in honey flavored with vanilla and cinnamon. Once all ingredients are combined, let them simmer for almost an hour so they can be enjoyed.
In any case, whatever your preferences are this Easter, we hope you have a lovely holiday and enjoy your free time with family or dear friends.
